March 2007
Dear Patients and Friends,
In this, my first e-health letter, I plan to summarize and review my general recommendations for a supplemental nutritional protocol for anyone to follow. I believe this to be necessary due to deficiencies in our food supply. I would also like to familiarize you with several important new concepts for treatment that I have learned through my continuing education efforts over this past year. By attending trainings and seminars and through my own readings, consultations and other investigations of treatments and modalities, I am constantly updating my knowledge to bring you the best skills I can master to help you to be healthy.
The following is not intended as advice on any specific patient’s case and should not be interpreted as such. It is not intended as prescribing treatment for or prevention of any specific disease or health condition, but rather to promote good health through supporting the normal healthy structure and function of the body. Those who wish to receive personalized advice specifically tailored to their individual circumstances and health status should make an appointment for that purpose.
Minimum Supplemental Protocol for Healthy People
1. Multivitamin with minerals, no iron (unless your ferritin is low), and no copper
2. Probiotics- 60 Billion organisms per day at the end of a meal
3. Omega 3 fatty acids in the form of Fish Oil (3-9 capsules daily),
Krill Oil (2 capsules daily) or Perilla Oil (6 capsules daily)
4. Emulsified Cod Liver Oil (1-3 capsules daily)
5. B Complex 3-4 times per day
6. Vitamin C, amount as tolerated, 3-4 times per day
While many of us attempt to eat locally grown, whole and organic foods when we can, it is not always possible. Many of the foods that we consume are processed and/or preserved or are picked before they are ripe and then shipped from the place they are grown, to the place they will be sold. All of these factors, as well as other food production practices, contribute to the reduction of nutrients in the foods we use to prepare our meals. The above supplement protocol gives us back the nutrients missing in many of our foods and gives our bodies what they need to achieve better health. See www.westonaprice.org for more fascinating information on how food production and farming practices affect our health.
New Supplements and Treatments
VITAMIN D The most important new addition to my knowledge base came from a Medical Education Seminar that I attended in Vermont last year. Everyone should have their Vitamin D levels tested. All of the clients I have tested so far are seriously deficient, even when they have been supplementing with the usually suggested 400 IU’s per day. This was even at the end of summer, when our bodies are able to manufacture Vitamin D from sunlight. Living in the Northern latitudes, the light we do get is inadequate for us to produce any Vitamin D for at least 6 months of the year. Low Vitamin D levels have been implicated in depression, osteoporosis, immune dysfunction and Multiple Sclerosis.
IODINE I have also learned much more about our body’s need for iodine. Most of us are quite deficient in this essential mineral. This can contribute to cyst formations in our body, including fibrocystic breast disease, polycystic ovarian syndrome, and other cysts. It is also essential for optimal thyroid function, which is involved in weight management and regulating body temperature. We cannot get enough iodine from iodized salt, but there are multiple options to choose from in treating this deficiency.
If your body temperature runs below 98.6 degrees and you and I have not discussed thyroid hormone resistance, give me a call to set up a telephone consultation appointment. See www.WilsonsTemperatureSyndrome.com for lots more information.
COLCHICINE A new treatment option for inflammatory conditions has come to my attention. Colchicine when administered by IV is used in the treatment of sciatica and other forms of back pain, neuropathy, gout, osteoarthritis, and auto-immune disorders. This is a medication that has been used in Western medicine for a very long time and is derived from the crocus plant. It is usually administered by mouth for gout, but works extraordinarily well when used intravenously for the other conditions mentioned above, without the side-effects of other anti-inflammatory medications. The relief can be immediate and last for 6 months or more.
EPICOR™ I have begun prescribing a new product for immune support. It is called Epicor™. I recommend daily use on a continuous basis for my clients with immune issues or for those who wish to avoid colds and flues. To learn more about Epicor™ go to: www.VRP.com. This product is no longer exclusively manufactured, so it can be found at many vitamin distributors on the Web. We stock only Epicor™ from VRP (Vitamin Research Products) because we trust the purity of their product. There has been a major reduction in the cost of Epicor™ and I pass that on to my patients.
While I do consult with many of you on a regular basis, I would like to recommend that all patients schedule a check-in every 6 months to a year. This can be a short telephone consult in most cases. We would review your case, your supplement protocol and medications, any changes in your symptoms and follow up with any labs that need re-testing.
Thank you all for the honor you have given me by choosing me to be your health consultant. I enjoy serving you immensely.
